My Students

Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our city. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.

Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.

We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.

My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of; instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.

My Project

At our school, every student in the high school is assigned a Chromebook. This makes our school a 1:1 school when it comes to computer access for students. Being a 1:1 school has made it so that students can access much of their classroom material from Google Classroom, an online learning platform. This has been especially helpful for my students with their article writing, since typing is much faster and easier for them than handwriting.

An area of difficulty for my resource special education students is the non-existence of an actual mouse to use with their Chromebook and how it affects their writing.

Although every Chromebook comes with a tracking pad, it is difficult for my students to use them, especially when writing in Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs. This is because often the steps needed to refine or format their final journalism drafts require the use of deep menus that you can only navigate via a right click of the mouse. Since there are no "clicker buttons" on the track pad, my students get very frustrated. With your donation to this project, you are ensuring that all of my budding journalists will be able to use a wireless mouse that can work with their school-assigned Chromebook that will be collected at the end of each school year.
