My Students
Imagine a young child who is eager to learn picking up a book with an enticing cover and taking that book to a cozy reading nook only to discover that he couldn't read it. Feeling like a non-reader hurts. Kids need to be able to select books that they can read. Discouragement must be prevented!
My students live in a gorgeous small town surrounded by mountains and water.
The entire outdoors is a playground for them, as many come from families who enjoy hiking, hunting, and boating. They are a robust bunch, tolerant of the seasons and imaginative in their outdoor play. Yet more than half of them live in poverty. This greatly limits their exposure to books and technology, which are so important to their future. Our school has less than 400 students (grades Pre-K through 6), and it has received the Blue Ribbon award and a decent achievement ranking. The teachers work together to bring the most to their students, and of course, we do so with limited funds. My classroom reflects budget limitations when it comes to books! There aren't enough in my room to meet the needs of my students, who have reading levels ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade! Yes - among my 26 students, I have huge variances in reading ability.
My Project
Second graders love to learn. They are full of enthusiasm. I know that my students feel school is a good place to be because of the opportunities all around them. I am proud of our classroom and all that it offers them, but what my students struggle most with is easily locating books on their reading level. The books I have in my classroom library don't meet the needs of all these kiddos, and I want to be sure that each student gains confidence each time he or she sits down to read. If they hold a book in their hands that is too hard to read, they pretend to read, or they get up and down to keep looking for a just-right book. A leveled library would enable every child to easily select a book that is readable. That brings smiles, confidence, and learning, and provides the impetus to keep on reading!
As Maya Angelou said, 'Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.' Success in reading is a bridge to all else, and 2nd graders must discover that they are able readers.
Just right books, which a leveled library provides, assure that each child is successful enough in reading to solidify a love of books in him or her. Help impact my students in this way. Please donate toward a leveled library for my students.
