Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." This quote shows how much my fifth graders love to read! Unfortunately, their access to a good book is very limited. This project will give them entry to a classroom library that will light the spark of literacy
My 25 fifth graders are joyful and inquisitive learners.
They are part of a diverse group that has been together in the same class since kindergarten. They are like a family. Many of the students come from under-resourced homes. Their parents or they themselves immigrated from Mexico and Central America and are pushing themselves to get a great education in order to build a better future for their families. Many of my students hope to be the first one in their family to attend college.
They are challenged by a school that lacks resources for readers. Our school library is small and sparse. The shelves are half empty and many of the books are decades old. This is especially true for books for upper grades. My students are often disappointed that the book they chose is checked out and they have to be put on a waiting list that is weeks long. In addition, our school cannot afford a full time librarian and our library is at times closed.
Let's give these eager readers what they need!
My Project
These books will help start our classroom library, giving students consistent access to books tailored to their literacy needs. They will select and check out books they will read independently, experiencing the magic of reading by getting lost in stories they will love. My students have reading levels that span from third grade all the way to 8th grade and beyond. These levels have been determined by their performance on reading assessments that measure their fluency and comprehension. As such, I have a wide range of needs to meet.
This project meets these needs because it seeks 100 book titles that range from a third grade reading level to an eighth grade reading level. Therefore, students will be able to select "just right" books that are at their level and grow their literacy skills. This is also true for advanced readers. They need to read books they find challenging so that they can stay engaged, interested, and also grow their levels to fulfill their accelerated potential.
Donations to this project will be invaluable in building joyful, life long readers.
Our district supplies us with textbooks with non-leveled short stories followed by questions, quizzes, and spelling words. Some students find these hard, others boring, and few find them to be "just right". This project will change my students' lives for the better by giving them the pleasure of an appropriately challenging book that will build their love of literacy that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
