My Students

Could you be inspired by an old, dusty bookshelf filled with outdated books your teacher collected from yard sales and church bazaars? Well, I've gotten rid of the dust, and now I need your help to make my bookshelves come alive with new and exciting books to inspire my students.

I teach in a high poverty, completely minority, large urban public high school in CA.

Most of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. But, I'm pushing them to go even further in their studies. Recently, I began a silent sustained reading program. Unlike previous programs, I found that students not only brought books but were excited for an opportunity to read. This is a big deal because the community as a whole needs more reading opportunities.

My Project

I want my classroom reading library to be bright, engaging, and filled with interesting books my kids are going to fight over reading. My students helped me create a list of some of their favorite books to add to my library for other students to read. I threw a couple good ones in myself. Overall, this is a list of books any teacher would be proud to have in their high school classroom library and any student would be able to find a book they found interesting.

You may find it hard to believe that so many classrooms do not have books for students to read.

However, with budget cuts, books for our students is not high on the priority list. It should be. Even the library is ill-equipped to handle the students in my school. With this addition to my classroom, you will be giving all of my students an opportunity to find that one book that inspires a lifetime love of reading. Thank you for your consideration.
