A Classroom Kitchen

Help me give my students tools that will enhance their understanding of money at a young age! We need a grocery store kit.

My Students

I teach a group of amazing, curious, and hardworking general and special education students in first grade. About 60% of my students have a range of disabilities, some of which include learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional disturbances, speech and language impairments, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Like any other class, my students' abilities and interests range across a wide spectrum.

All of my students require individual or small group attention; each day, I incorporate all of their learning styles, interests, and special education accommodations into our lessons.

Some of my students prefer visual or auditory cues for learning, while some require a more kinesthetic or tactile approach. My students come into our classroom each day with a love of school and a desire to grow as a learner.

My Project

Year after year, I notice that my students absolutely love to play real-life games and activities in the classroom. Some of these activities include playing house, playing school, and playing doctor. A recent crowd favorite among my students has become playing cashier. They absolutely love to "shop" around the classroom and "ring" each other up. They get so excited when it's time to "pay" for their food!

When I saw that Lakeshore had created Grocery Store and Money kits, I was so excited!

I know that with this play food, play money, and cash register, we will be able to teach our students so many important life skills such as budgeting, handling money, and the concept of spending.
