Help me give my students hands-on learning materials to keep them engaged and prepared during our virtual lessons by providing us with a math manipulative toolbox, word building tiles, dry-erase boards, and markers.
My virtual class community consists of 17 first graders whose family has decided to keep them fully learning at home during the pandemic. My students are part of a low-income/high poverty school district and just like many children, they rely on school for learning, safety, socialization, and guidance.
If I can describe my students in one word it would be resilient.
Learning virtually has forced them to move from a face to face teacher and peer guided environment, to now having to sit behind a screen with limited hands-on support that they are used to. They have adapted and adjusted to this new style of learning. They continue to follow directions, engage, participate, and complete their assignments the way they would if we were in-person learning. Despite everything, they continue to show up, show interest, and show off their beautiful growing minds every day.
My Project
Regardless of the economic and social challenges my students face at home every day, the classroom was an atmosphere where they were able to receive the best educational experience possible. Learning remotely has made it difficult for many of the students to have access to the basic resources that will support their academic needs.
I want to keep learning alive and active in our virtual classroom.
If the children have individual dry erase boards and markers, they will be able to write and draw during our lesson and show their work. This will allow me to give them instructional feedback to help correct their mistakes or provide positive reinforcement the way I would in the classroom.
Learning virtually meets the needs of our visual and auditory learners but it limits the access to materials that our tactile learners will benefit from the math manipulative toolbox and letter tiles for hands-on instruction.
Giving my students these materials will help to create the at-home learning experience they deserve!
