Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Third graders in a New York public school who go home to a house, apartment or shelter that has no books. This advanced third grade class in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but have little to no resources to do so.

Our most recent read aloud - The Time Machine - and a character study of H.G. Wells has been a great success! But, a Classic being read to third graders?! With the new "Classic Starts" series, books geared towards 7-9 year-olds, my group of third graders will have the chance to read the books that we all enjoyed as teenagers and adults! Treasure Island! Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! Phantom of the Opera! With exposure to these titles and more, my kids will learn to love the literature that will take them to new heights in reading and in life!

I already bought the book The Time Machine from this series and began it as a read aloud to my kids - a story they absolutely adore. I still need the 39 other titles to showcase the whole series in my classroom. These books will be THE highlight of our classroom library - brand new, hardcover books, that their teacher and so many adults in this world LOVE! My kids deserve to know that there are so many great books written just for them! Every time we finish a character study (perhaps Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island can follow H.G. Wells...), we won't waste any time getting started on the next one. This is not to mention that the whole series will be available to my kids to borrow and read in class and at home, where most of them have no books.

By making a donation to this project, you will be giving my students the greatest gift of all - exposure to outstanding literature. This is no ordinary series of books. This series is what gave me and many other adults, perhaps you, a LOVE for reading.
