Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are currently studying United States History in the 8th grade. They are a highly motivated and very bright group of very inquisitive learners.
A very important topic we will be covering this year is the Holocaust. This provides a number of learning opportunities and a number of challenges. It is a complicated topic filled with unimaginable horrors that are very difficult to cover in a middle school environment.
Maus by Art Spiegelman provides a powerful resource to use for Holocaust education and was recognized with a Pulitzer Prize Special Award. Maus explores many complicated issues using anthropomorphic animals to tell the story of a Holocaust survivor. This highly creative approach is what makes Maus such an effective resource to use with 8th graders. If each of my 30 students had their own copies, they could really dive deep into the many layers of the book.
The Holocaust is a very difficult topic to cover in middle school. However, with your generous donation towards a class set of Maus my students will achieve a much higher level of understanding about a very important event relevant to all people.
