Help me give my students the experience of bringing a novel to life!

My Students
I teach some amazing seventh-graders!! We live in a small, tight-knit fishing/tourism community. Many of my students come from families who depend on tourism to support their business.
My students are smart, fun, hardworking, and love to collaborate.
They never cease to amaze me with their creativity and out of the box thinking! They are more than willing to try new activities and love when our class activities are linked to real-life.
My goal for our classroom is to create an interactive novel study in which my students actually become part of the novel. They will experience first-hand what the characters in the novel experienced (to an extent).
I strive to give my students an engaging, student-centered classroom where they have a voice in their learning experience. I want my kids to walk through the door every day, excited to learn.
My Project
Picture this...students enter the classroom and immediately see the classroom is divided by the Berlin Wall. Students are given a piece of paper that states either east or west. Throughout the novel study, students will be experiencing life as a student from either the east or west side of the Berlin Wall.
This cross-curricular, interactive novel study will be an experience my students will never forget!
Students will receive "rewards" or "consequences" based on where they live (east or west). Math and science will be incorporated by having students "plot" vacant land and plant seeds. ELA and social studies will be incorporated throughout by research and reading activities.
As an English teacher, I am tasked with sharing my passion for reading with my students and passing that along to them. By making the novel study interactive, this will become an engaging experience that will hopefully have my students begging for more.
