A Clash of Prose Novels and Graphic Novels

My Students

Our students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Our school comes in at about 40% free and reduced price lunch. I teach 9th grade English. Many of my students are considered at risk and are reading below grade level. While many of our students are struggling, they have a drive and a motivation to succeed.

My students are fresh into high school and are searching for where they belong.

It's in this first year of high school that these students begin to change and transform into young adults. Our students are active and eager to learn. While they may seem lost at times, it's throughout this first year where they really start to get a feel for the rest of their lives.

My Project

The final unit of our year is a graphic novel unit where we read the novel 'I Kill Giants.' Our focus is on exploring this new genre and also exploring the theme of transformation and change. I have my students for two class periods back to back. The first is English 9 and the second is Strategic Reading. All of my students are reading below grade level so they are in this double period class to gain the skills needed to get caught up. We will be reading 'I Kill Giants' in English and I want to pair it with the novel 'When a Monster Calls' in Strategic Reading.

This books will allow my students a second access point to the theme while at the same time working on reading comprehension and vocabulary skills in an attempt to get caught up to grade level.

We will also be exploring the differences between the modes of texts (graphic novels and traditional prose). We will be exploring the theme of transformation in both texts as well as in their own lives. They will use the skills we've been learning this whole year to apply their knowledge to reading comprehension and vocabulary.
