My Students

My students are from an inner city section of Cleveland, known for unsafe streets. We focus on making safety one of our top concerns at school because a feeling of safety allows you to focus on learning while at school.

My students are fourth and fifth graders just trying to succeed in education with obstacles that we are trying to overcome to match our counterparts in more affluent areas.

I would like my students to be able to learn modern uses for technology such as Google Docs and online storage to be ready for future careers.

My Project

Last school year, I started writing Donors Choose projects to begin building a classroom set of Chromebooks. I am still on that journey because I saw amazing talents emerging with my smaller class being able to each work on their own computer all at the same time.

We use our Chromebooks daily for math and science classes for Compass Learning, Front Row, and access to our online science virtual labs and lessons.

Having a larger class means students have to rotate and take turns on the computers instead of everyone working on them at the same time. Our district only provides three desktop computers for the students to use, so adding our own classroom set of Chromebooks is critical for success.

We need Chromebooks, headphones, and computer mice. We complete daily practice on the Chromebooks, with mice and mouse pads, to learn how to use the technology so we are better prepared for our online state testing. We are also conducting lessons in Google Docs and Google Slides to help the students prepare for middle school, high school, and post high school careers that could include using Google services. The students did their first ever project with Google Slides at the end of the last school year, and they were phenomenal, although they had to share computers and one email address. I can only imagine what they could produce if they no longer had to share a computer and did not have limited time to work on a computer.
