My students, in general, come from low-income, nontraditional homes in Onaway, MI where education is not always valued. However, our students come to school every day. Our average daily attendance is over 95%, and our students yearn for the structure and stable family atmosphere that our school offers them.
My students are proud of what they know and proud of where they come from, and they break the rules when it comes to traditionally impoverished students.
My students succeed at a higher level than the research says they should, and they are constantly looking for a challenge. This means that, as a teacher, I have to look for ways to challenge them and keep their interest in a quickly changing world.
My Project
High school students often get overlooked in their need for novelty and movement during the class period. They have extra energy that, when it is given an output, allows them to better focus and be more engaged in their own learning.
During the winter months especially, many of my students do not have an outlet for their energy.
Wobble stools, yoga balls, and wheeled chairs have all been shown to be beneficial for improved concentration. I have requested 6 rolling swivel chairs. There has been a great deal of research showing the benefit of alternative seating, with unfortunate little done in support of it with older students. My own experience; however, with my own students shows me that this type of seating helps.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
