My Students

The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher. Sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero, and with that I strive to help my students in any way possible.

My Project

I know the most important thing a child needs to learn is to read. Reading is the key to every other subject level that a student will learn. If a child can read, they have access to everything. The school I work for recently stopped allowing students to take books home because so many were not being returned. Without those books, many students are not able to read at home. Research repeatedly says that access to books and the number of books students have access to directly correlates with interest in reading, reading ability, and literacy rates. Since the students at my school come from low economic homes, their access to books is very small.

I want to be able to provide my students with book bags filled with 5-6 high interest books.

These book bags would be rotated out weekly to give students books to read at home every day! Classroom libraries should have a ratio of 30 books for every student. I would love to be able to have that amount of books in my classroom library. I have spent a lot of money out of my own pocket to give my students high interest books on every reading level, but I don't have enough to send 5-6 books home. I know that it is a possibility some of these books may not be returned, but students need the opportunity to read at home.

I'm hoping with your donation this dream can become a reality for my students. I was lucky enough as a child to grow up with a bountiful choice in books because my parents knew how important that was for my continuing education. Due to the economic circumstances my students live in, they don't have access to books at home and I hope to change that.
