A Chick, Chick Here and a Chick, Chick There!

Help me give my students a hands-on experience with the life cycle of a chick by hatching our own chicks for a hands-on science lesson.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from varying degrees of socioeconomic status, background, and ethnicity. Most are English Language Learners, but they work tirelessly to understand and comprehend the English language by practicing English by asking and answering questions, conversing with fellow students, and participating in group work during their small group and intervention time.

My students are the most smart, caring, inquisitive individuals you will ever meet and they love showing what they have learned to all entering our classroom den!

They make it easy to teach them because they soak up every bit of information given to them and then want more. My students come from varying backgrounds, including single parent homes, blended families, and new immigrants to the United States, yet their yearning for knowledge never ceases to amaze me! Our school serves grades K-12 and as such, is all inclusive. You can generally see siblings, and family members throughout the halls of our school, giving students a sense of a home away from home.

My Project

We are now in the point in our science curriculum where we are learning about life cycles. I do not just want to teach my students about life cycles, I want them to experience this amazing event in animals first hand! I want them to be a part of this unique opportunity in my classroom to actually have hands on experience in animal life cycles themselves.

My students will greatly benefit from this experience as they will learn how to take care of an animal before it is born, they will learn team work as they take turns turning and watering the eggs and they will also learn math as they record the temperature inside the incubator each day day.

My students need supplies such as chick bedding, egg intubator, heat lamp, chick feeder and a cage so that they can properly and safely take care of baby chicks when they hatch. This will ensure that my students have the experience of a lifetime by having a total hands on experience. These supplies will enable my students to prepare for the hatching process with most needed supplies.

The opportunity to experience the life cycle of a chick is an experience they will remember for years to come! They will remember how they used text to world to compare what the text taught them and how they were able to actually experience the life cycle of an animal. This is an experience of a lifetime, one they will not have again and one they will not soon forget and will remember when they think of their year in 3rd grade!
