A Chance For Young Artists

My students need drawing boards, charcoal, erasers, pencils, paper, pastels, sharpeners, paint, and paintbrushes.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Motta's classroom raised $541

This project is fully funded

About 300 9-12 graders from various parts of the city attend our small, public high school, which has a focus on social justice and project-based learning. The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and due to budget cuts, many classes are just below or at the maximum class size of 31 students.

Our school has never had the funding for an art class or an after-school art program, and with last year's severe budget cuts that left our school only able to offer classes that reach minimum graduation requirements, the outlook for an art program became quite dismal. However, with the help of a licensed art teacher currently in a masters program to become a high school art teacher, I am working to launch an after school art program that will provide my students with the opportunity to hone their interests in drawing and painting. Under the guidance of myself and the talented art graduate student that has graciously offered to volunteer his time, any student interested in the program is welcome to come learn the foundations of drawing and painting, to explore areas of individual artistic interest, and, for those looking to attend an art school - create a strong portfolio that they would otherwise not be given the opportunity to do.

Now, given the expenses that accompany art programs -- hence one of the main reasons that they are difficult to keep afloat in low-income area schools -- we cannot begin this program without the financial backing to purchase these art supplies for the students.

We have adults willing to volunteer their time, and students anxious to participate, and now all that we need is your help to purchase the art materials to get us started. With your assistance, you will be giving students access to quality instruction in the arts and an opportunity to express themselves in ways that they have never been exposed to. With your help, students will finally have an experience with the arts that is often enjoyed only by students in the surrounding suburban communities. Most importantly, with the support of this program, students interested in pursuing art in their future career, will finally have the opportunity to do so.
