Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
By the end of the year, I want my students to be able to analyze works of art at a college level and to learn various techniques to create their own works of art. But one of my biggest challenges is funding; while I have funds for my science classes, I pay out of pocket for my art classes.
The students I work with are not what you would typically call "good students." In fact, many of them either dropped out of traditional schools or were kicked out.
They come from low-income backgrounds, and many of them have anger management issues or are homeless. Despite everything, they are looking for a second chance at getting an education to change their lives.
My Project
I envision having the students learn about concepts such as symbolism and color scheme by analyzing the work of various artists like Frieda Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe. The students will use watercolor techniques, among others, as a basis for replicating their work and for creating their own original pieces. I hope that they will be able to compile solid art portfolios by the end of the year so they can demonstrate what they can do to the community.
A donation to this cause will mean that my students will have a safe, therapeutic space to explore art.
But more than that, they will be able to build their self-esteem because they can say that they are proud of their work at the end of the year.
