Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.
My Project
My students' curriculum is online, with many books and activities needing to be printed. Color ink is needed to keep their attention and have their materials as nice to look at as their regular education counterparts who have color pictures in their textbooks. Laminating sheets are needed for center activities so they can be used over and over again for different groups. Dry erase markers will be used for my students' daily binders for calendar, math, and writing work. Crayons, glue, and colored pencils are for independent work.
It is difficult to have work that is at my students' interest levels, as 4th and 5th graders functioning at a kindergarten level, and also have it age appropriate.
So much of their work and activities are put together and adapted so that it is doable. These materials help make that possible. They will allow my students to complete work on their own and feel a sense of accomplishment. Isn't that what we all want?
