My Students

On the surface, many may be taken aback by my library's apparent disorder, the lack of desks, the constant movement of students, cardboard everywhere, the constant chatter and the energy level. But, spend more than a cursory look, more than a quick investigation and you will find the future of education.

The movement turns out to be students owning their environment, identifying necessary tools and working to set up their learning conditions to best suit their needs.

The cardboard is indicative of creation, an expression of student ideas and working product. The chatter is purposeful, direct, and focused on deep investigation of subject materials. The energy level shows true engagement by every single child in the classroom.

Our children thrive in self-directed activities with hands-on learning and collaborative play. They make choices in their learning which encourages personal accountability using their teacher as a resource.

My Project

In experiencing viewpoints from other cultures, races, religions and countries students will build empathy and world views that will serve them later as they enter adulthood and choose careers.

We live in a global society and storytelling through art is a great way to allow students a glimpse of it.

Our local arts will enable the kids to see the arts as a career choice as well as a celebration of culture. Students will read and learn about two South Carolina artist, David Drake (Dave the Potter https://gcma.org/david-drake/) and Arianne King Comer. They will then create their own art in these styles.

Students will learn to 3D CAD and print stamps which will be used in their ceramic production line. Students will work with clay by creating stamped production pieces which will then be glazed and fired. We will work with the Greenville Museum of Art to learn how pottery was created by Dave the Potter as both functional and a form of resistance.

Students will then move on to the fabric arts by investigating and chatting with Arianne King Comer (https://ariannekingcomerart.com/). She creates and uses her pieces to tell stories of celebration, joy and resistance. The children will use the batik process to dye fabric and then stitch together to create a display quilt.

Our final part students will take their knowledge of these two artists and create their own piece with beadwork.
