This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Resource teacher who services children who are struggling with the academics. I service students who come from homes where parents work two to three jobs in order to support their children. I have Kindergartens and I go all the way up to the sixth grade. I see at least five groups daily. Some of my students are in general education classrooms and some are in classrooms with twelve students, one teacher, and a Para professional. Most of my students need the extra push to make it in their classes. When I get a new student, I test him/her to see what I need to help them with. In an ideal situation I would be able to individualize instruction and target each child's weaknesses. Unfortunately, I need to pick up as many as eight students at a time due to shortage of staffing in my school. It is very hard to meet each child's needs with such a large group of students. I wrote two proposals requesting listening kits that would allow me to target instruction for each student. In each kit there are different skills my students need to improve on. This allows me to take turns working with some students on a specific skill while letting other children who already mastered that specific skill work on a different skill using the listening kit. I was so happy when my proposals were sponsored!!!! This, I thought was a great idea. The problem is that the cassette player that I have does not let me plug in headphones (It is very old). I saw a great cassette/CD player that allows me to place more than one student at a time using multiple headphones. I would use the cassette/CD player everyday for about 35 minutes in each session, while working with students on meeting their specific goals. The students who will use the listening center will receive a dry erase marker and working cards. They will mark their answers and at the end of the session I would be able to see how they are progressing. There is even a final assessment that the students can take to show me evidence of their learning. I would also like to add the 8-Station Junction Box with Volume Control to help me place more than one student at a time in the listening center. I can't wait to put my plan into action.
