This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each morning, my kindergarten students arrive in my classroom ready to learn. We start our day off together by singing, dancing and learning at circle time. Much of our day consists of coming back to the carpet to read books, watch educational clips, and having some fun "brain break" songs!
Our Title I elementary school is a community school, where students and families come together to make the best of education.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We also have a family program, where supplies, clothing, and other supports are provided to students and their immediate families. I teach kindergarten students, with most not having attended pre-school. I teach them their life and school skills through hands-on, fun, and enriching projects.
My Project
My students are small, yet still have no sense of giving each other space. They need a lot of guidance for everything they do within the classroom, and a carpet for circle time will really help them get an understanding of personal space. The carpet chosen will be a bright and colorful addition to make the classroom more inviting. Not only will it be for sitting, but my students will be able to identify the letters on it by playing different games. They can also identify the different colors on the rug. With all the different parts of the carpet, there are so many options of seating for my students. It is important to me that they are able to have choices within the classroom to become more independent.
There is so much that a simple carpet can do for my classroom.
It can clearly define an area for whole group teaching and the reading area. It will also provide another way for students to play matching games with the letters and colors. Most of my kindergarten students are in school for the first time, and like the bright colors of an inviting classroom. The carpet will be a small way of showing them it is fun and cozy, while still a very big part of learning.
