My Students
I teach about 130 wonderful students a year. They range from 13-17 years old usually and are not typically interested in reading. They believe they are not readers and often lack the motivation to give literature a try. The majority read below their grade level and struggle with typical literature pieces. A lot of my students plan to go straight into the workforce and do not understand the value of reading.
Unfortunately, our school is in a rural area with no library, as the school district cannot afford to pay a librarian.
Therefore, the amount of books students are exposed to is limited by the books teachers have in their classrooms.
One great thing about my kids is that they are willing to try new things in class with me and keep a smile on their faces. I enjoy interacting with them and helping them find literature that meets their interests!
My Project
Candy is a strong motivator for my students. Because the students respond so well to candy, I use it as a motivator to keep their phones away during class time. I have a cellphone wall in the back of my room and I do random phone draws where the winner, or winners, receives a piece of candy. Because the students want candy so much, a lot of my students will keep their phones in the cell phone holder for the whole period! Having their phones away is great for their concentration and focus during class. Students are distracted by their phones and always trying to check it, so without their phones, I can push them so much further in their education when they are free of that distraction.
I go through handfuls of candy daily and the students still beg for more.
I would love the opportunity to be able to continue the motivation of keeping their phones up and away so that we can focus on their education by having plenty of candy as a prize.
