A Calming Space for Student Well-being
As a school counselor, I see firsthand the emotional and mental challenges our students face daily.
Research shows that students today are experiencing higher levels of stress and anxiety, which can hinder their academic performance and overall well-being. According to the American Psychological Association, 70% of teens report anxiety and depression as a major problem among their peers.
Our students, especially those in performing arts, often deal with high expectations, the pressure to excel, and personal struggles that can make it hard for them to focus or feel grounded. A calming room can serve as a refuge where students can take a break from these stresses, practice mindfulness, and reset emotionally.
Statistics on the Need for Calming Spaces:
• 50% of all mental health disorders begin by age 14, and stress plays a significant role in triggering these conditions. (World Health Organization)
• Schools that offer mental health resources and spaces to de-stress report a 28% improvement in student behavior and emotional management. (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
• Creating safe, calming spaces in schools is proven to decrease disruptive behavior and absenteeism, resulting in a more focused, productive classroom environment.
Our counseling office wants to create a calming space for each student in our building to have a place to go when they are storming or having an uneasy day. Our goal is to make this calming space a success through the positive impact it will have on our students and to deter absenteeism due to these challenges.
