This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students with autism are attending school for the first time in a newly opened Flexroom! This space is designed for students who struggle with self-regulation in the regular education setting.
When a student is feeling challenged and is experiencing considerable levels of emotional dysregulation this may result in problem behavior that interferes with successful participation in the general education setting.
One way to help children learn how to self-regulate is by providing them with sensory items for our calm-down corner. The Classroom Calming Kit is packed with a variety of tools that help children learn to regulate their emotions—and find their favorite method for calming down and comforting themselves! The colorful sand timers provide a highly visual way to measure time—from 60 seconds to 10 full minutes! This helps with transitioning from one activity to the next. Once the student is calm and regulated they can return to their classroom and are ready for learning.
