My students need tools such as these Magnetic Sensory Builders, a Sensory Ball Set, and sand timers to help them self-regulate their emotions, calm down, re-center, and settle their minds/bodies.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Third-grader (Noun)
\ˈthərd grā-dər\
- Someone who is a mathematician, reader, writer, artist, scientist, dancer, leader, explorer, and friend.
- Someone who NEEDS access to technology, high-quality books and an inclusive place to learn.
My third graders are curious and they try hard...really hard. They love to read, write, explore, and find answers to questions.
Did you know that they are also BILINGUAL, bicultural, and biliterate? They speak, read, and write in two languages (English and Spanish). That also means that during the school day, they learn in both languages.
My Project
My goal is to teach children self-regulation strategies and how to use those strategies (and tools) to remain calm at times of distress.
The idea of a calming out corner is that children can go there when they need to calm down or when one can see they’re getting worked up or not coping with strong emotions.
Children can get overwhelmed by big emotions - whether its frustration, anger or sadness and a 'calming corner' can provide students with an appropriate outlet for these 'emotions.' This calming corner will be equipped with tools such as Magnetic Sensory Builders, a Sensory Ball Set, and sand timers. We all know big emotions can escalate into yelling, shouting, or lashing out. By giving children the opportunity to calm down, we can prevent outbursts or unpleasant behaviors.
