My Project

My 5th grade students are thoughtful, resilient, and full of heart. As they grow academically, they’re also learning how to navigate emotions, support one another, and build a stronger classroom community.

This project will help create a dedicated Calming Corner—a peaceful, inviting space designed to support students when they feel overwhelmed or upset.

With a comfortable swivel chair, soft rug, calming posters, and floor cushions, students will have a place where they can reset emotionally and return to learning with confidence. In this space, they’ll practice self-regulation skills and learn to notice when a classmate might need time or support. Over time, this will help them see the world through the eyes of others—recognizing that everyone processes emotions differently and needs compassion in their own way.

Students will take ownership of maintaining the Calm Corner and will be encouraged to respectfully offer it to peers who may be struggling—learning to alleviate the suffering of others through small, meaningful acts of kindness. To measure success, we’ll use reflection journals and peer conversations to track emotional awareness, respectful use of the space, and how often students identify and support one another with empathy.
