Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 6th Grade class at M. Charter Middle School is a wonderful bunch of excited future scientists and mathematicians. Many of our students live near our school, in the city of Richmond. Our school re-located to central Richmond from the Hilltop neighborhood and subsequently, have had to cut our class sizes to accommodate our facilities (Which is a good thing for our students, as they get more 1 on 1 attention with their teachers, but hard for the school because we have a much tighter budget than in the past).
The 6th grade class this year has a mixture of backgrounds, a mixture of SES, experiences, and language abilities, however, many of them likely would not have the opportunity to take an educational trip to the aquarium on their own.
Last year, we were also able to attend a class at the aquarium which allowed the students to learn even more than they would just visiting with family.
My Project
Last year our trip to the aquarium got our students hooked on science. For many students (and their parent chaperones) it was their first time visiting the aquarium. We want to make sure that our students have the same opportunity that the current 7th graders had last year!
Our school moved over the summer, as our old building was bought out from under us, and we have had to downsize considerably, which is great for class sizes, but has hurt our school budget tremendously.
We don't have any funding for extras this year, and I have already spent at least $800 out of pocket on my classroom. Last year, this was one of our big field trips, along with a camping trip in the spring, and I am willing to give it my all to make sure that the students have the same opportunities that they did at our last site.
Last year, students came back from the trip excited to keep learning about science. They came back invigorated and ready for more, and with amazing reflections about their experiences. It really set the tone for the entire second semester. While there, the aquarium usually offers us special programming that the students won't otherwise see, giving them a view into another type of science lab.
We can't make a trip this far without a bus, and we need your help to get that bus!
