This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our elementary school, we are passionate about creating an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. Many of our students have diverse learning needs, including autism, epilepsy, and sensory sensitivities, and traditional fluorescent lighting can be overwhelming, distracting, or even physically distressing for them. By providing alternative lighting options in each grade-level classroom and our beloved school library, we can make our learning spaces more accessible and comfortable for everyone.

This project will fund standing floor lamps and alternative lighting solutions for each grade level and our school library.

These lights will allow teachers to adjust the brightness and warmth of their classroom lighting, reducing glare and harshness, and creating a more calming atmosphere for students who need it. Our school library is a treasured space where students explore new worlds through books, but its outdated lighting doesn't support the inviting, comfortable space we strive for. By upgrading to softer, more flexible lighting, we can make our library a more welcoming place where all students feel at ease.

While lighting may seem like a small detail, research shows that a well-designed environment significantly impacts student focus, engagement, and overall well-being. Alternative lighting can reduce sensory overload for students with autism and other sensory-processing challenges. It can decrease the risk of headaches and discomfort caused by fluorescent lighting. It can also improve student concentration and engagement by creating a calm, focused atmosphere.
