Making art with recycled materials can be fun. But students also need to get a chance to use quality materials such as linoleum blocks, real block cutting tools, silk screen film, & decent tempera paint. These materials allow my bright students to reach their potential in their artwork.
Our school is diverse, urban and awesome!
My school is an academic magnet public high school, one of the top 5 high schools in our city. Kids travel from the far reaches of the city to attend our school. Like many urban public schools, there are budgetary struggles. Despite this, the school community continues to be one of the best around. The kids are amazing in how they support each other, too. Our student body is tremendously diverse and the kids get along great. They see their diversity as a strength. They set a great example to adults. This school truly gives me hope for the future of our city and country!
Students in my art classes are very creative and smart. They like a challenge. While the school is an academic magnet, you wouldn't think the art classes would produce much. However, these kids are really good artists! My students' artwork is rich and thoughtful. I look forward to every day at my school. I am a happy art teacher!
My Project
It is important for an art teacher to give students a chance to use a variety of materials. I make an huge effort to stretch my tiny budget and get the most for every penny. We often use recycled materials that don't cost anything. Too often, I tap my personal funds to cover costs. Reality is, though, I just can't buy things like linoleum blocks, silkscreen materials, or a full range of paint colors for them. My students need to be able to make a painting with all the colors they need. We really need paint! I want them to make prints! We just made 'string prints,' gluing string to recycled cardboard and making monoprints. This is a good experience, but I want to take the students' materials experience up a notch, and show them how great it is to use the supplies I am requesting. If my students can turn old, dusty string and donated glue into awesome printing plates, I can't wait to see what they can do with real linoleum blocks, silkscreen film, and a full range of paint colors!!
These supplies are critical to our art classes!
The printmaking materials and paint will help me to bring students the full experience I'd like to bring them. Its an exciting thought that maybe soon, my students will be planning and cutting linoleum blocks and silk screen templates, as well as making exquisite paintings. These supplies will help make my students' year in art, one they fondly remember.
