This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school eager to learn! My school is a Title I school. We are in a very low income neighborhood, with 98% of the students coming from low-income families. A total of 78.2% students who attend this school are Latino, with a total of 39.4% of student population being English Language Learners.
I'm a Special Education teacher in Chicago Public Schools.
This is my 10th year teaching. The students that I work with have been diagnosed with Learning Disabilities, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, Juvenile Dermatomyositis, and ADHD. I also have experience working with dual language programs and experience working with students learning English. The students that I service are very hard working and kind!
My Project
The current novels that this special education classroom has are very outdated. I am interested in having a bookcase full of books in which students cannot wait to get their hands on!
It takes the right book to intrigue the most hesitant readers.
Many of my students need help with reading comprehension and what better way to teach reading strategies than with books that they can connect to. This project marks the beginning of a new set of books for my students to pick from and enjoy. Thank you for being part of this!
