My Students
Books that are written for students in middle school and high school these days frequently use curse words and are not of real substance. I have found this book which does not cross those lines and addresses issues about school, peer pressure, and families, while being highly engaging.
My students are all at risk, due to a variety of factors, such as socio-economic status, and living in a world that exposes them to lifestyles that are not healthy or productive.
School is the most stable environment and we, as the teaching staff, try to create a learning environment that will foster a desire to learn and demonstrate a new way of life that can improve their outlook and goals.
My Project
My students need 25 copies of the book, "Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie," that will not cause moral or ethical questions, but still prompts them to think about others and deeper meanings of life. This is an excellent book. It is about a middle school student who is dealing with the typical stuff of school, such as grades, playing the drums in band and his little brother getting cancer. He learns how to prioritize and broaden his concern, outside of himself. It is a very sweet book and opens the minds of students to think beyond themselves. Also, we will be able to integrate research and presentations about cancer. It will show my students just how fortunate they are, regardless of their circumstances.
This project is important to me because it will provide them with a highly engaging story, broaden their perspective beyond themselves, be able to relate to the struggles of typical middle school students and open the door to integrating science into the classroom.
They will connect with the book, and have the opportunity to learn about bigger issues of the world, besides the entertainment industry.
