This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are AWESOME! They are in a 6th - 8th grade Special Day Class with me for English, Social Studies and Science. There are 7 boys and 4 girls in my class. The students have different learning disabilities such as Dyslexia, ADHD, and SLD. While they are all eager to learn, their disabilities can create barriers to their progress. Another barrier we come up against is a lack of supplies.
With the proper supplies and supports they can accomplish their goals!
My Project
Every year in our novel study units, the students and I read a book together. The novels we study become the mentor texts for the rest of our work in the English class (writing prompts, grammar lessons, comprehension practice). I try to select novels that are challenging but interesting.
We don't always have enough copies of the novels for each student to have their own.
This makes reading at home very difficult. Having their own copy of the book will give the students the opportunity to reread the chapters at home and have access to the text when answering their homework comprehension questions.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
