My Students
"Please read and annotate the readings. See you next week for discussion." Sounds like college, right? My students will be there in less than a year, and they aren't ready yet.
My students attend a college-prep charter school in a high-poverty neighborhood in California.
The vast majority of our students go on to college, and most of them will be the first in their families to do so. It is urgent that they develop the study skills that will allow them to be successful. Right now, students are lucky if they can take an assigned text home overnight, and they definitely can't write in it.
My Project
This binding machine will allow me to provide students for years to come with their own copies of texts to dive into and mark up with their thoughts and questions. This interaction with a text, especially a very challenging one, is crucial to a student's ability to develop a deep understanding of the text and to come up with specific, thoughtful comments in a discussion. My AP students will get a durable reader with selected excerpts and class resources, my students with special needs can have a copy of a class text for annotation in addition to the physical book, students choosing to perform a scene from "Fences" or "Othello" for a project can have a copy of the text to mark up with stage directions.

When their first professor sends them to the copy shop for a reader, my students will gain a measure of confidence and familiarity in their brand-new environment, and will be one step farther along in their path to college success.
