Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a neighborhood where there is crime, violence, drugs, mental illness, trauma, homelessness as well as poverty. Many of our scholars exhibit the symptoms of trauma - indeed many have seen or experienced violence and crime first-hand.
Most of my students are awarded free breakfast and lunch and come from low income and immigrant families.
We teachers sometimes don't have the supplies that we need to ensure that our scholars are all on a level playing field. Any amount you give towards this purchase will be truly appreciated!
My Project
The One and Only Ivan ... I read this book with my 4th graders, and what an impact it made in our class!
It pushed even my most reticent students to talk about empathy and kindness towards not only animals, but people.
Our animated and passionate conversations were powerful, and I am hoping to experience the same with our class.
My current students may be younger, but I am anticipating that similar passionate and animate conversations will be had.
The other purpose for reading this novel is that we will be able to learn about gorillas during our Science class.
