Help me give my students a chance to read an inspirational novel by a contemporary author. Also, to assign a book to each student and have them read at home and teach a longer novel.
Right now we only have a class set of Born a Crime. I would like to have enough novels to check out a book to each student and assign reading at home. Right now it takes so long to get through a novel because I'm relying on in-class work time. It makes it impossible to teach a longer text.
Students need to see themselves as readers outside of their LA classroom and having enough texts can help do that.
I chose Born a Crime because it's engaging, inspirational, and contemporary. Trevor Noah speaks to our students with his sense of humor and his compelling story. At the same time, it's not an easy read. Students will have to navigate the vocabulary and the narration, helping them grow as a reader.
I'm hoping that raising expectations with assigned reading, I'll see more engagement in class as well as an altered mindset. Students need to see themselves as lifelong learners and they have to be willing to read on their own to do this!
