My Students

"The more you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!"- Dr. Seuss

This year, I've been honored to take on a NEW position as the 5th grade English Language Arts teacher at my school.

I have known this group of kids since they were in kindergarten, but only this year have been able to experience their excitement for learning first hand. With 65+ students in total that I teach each day, we have a vast diversity of learners excited to engage in experience happening all around the world.

My school is part of the NYC Department of Education, educating a population of 89% who are economically disadvantaged. 19% of our school is considered English Language Learners and 19% receive Special Education services. The 5th grade is currently the largest grade in the building, with each class ranging in size from 22 students to 25 per class, all of who see me every day.

My Project

As the ONLY reading/writing teacher in 5th grade, it is my responsibility to promote a, "reader's life" in the classroom with my students. While I have been so grateful to already have a relatively expansive library in my room, there are a few additions that would really, "wow" my students and encourage them to read even that much more.

Since teaching an "upper grade" last year, I've noticed the overwhelming popularity of graphic novels with kids, particularly those who may be reading at a lower level but don't want to feel isolated because they can't read chapter books yet.

As a result, my goal is to include more opportunities for my students to get in on, "the action" by providing them with a plethora of graphic novel options. Recently, I purchased for them 10 graphic novels and, not surprisingly, they FLEW off my shelves. However, with 65+ kids to teach, I want to make sure MORE kids can get their hands on these books and feel confident with their reading.

On the flip side, I am now not only serving students with their first language in English, but also have the added challenge of teaching students with English as a second language as a monolingual teacher. While communication verbally sometimes gets tricky, I rely on the power of books to encourage my students to foster a love of learning. With only a few Spanish language books (predominately in picture book form) found in my library, it is also my goal to provide my ELL friends with quality, leveled/chapter book texts in their native language to get them excited about reading.
