My Project

I am a veteran 7th and 10th grade World History teacher, but also Academic Decathlon & Academic Pentathlon coach. Many students in my classes are struggling to find books they want to read for pleasure. With this in mind, I want to support my students, especially with reading and finding those books they love to read.

My school is primarily low-income and about seventy-five percent qualify for free breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks.

Parents are so supportive, but financially not all can provide everything their child may need to reach such academic heights that can be possible without donor support.

This includes access to more reading books that they would be interested in. My students show a great appreciation for reading but have difficulty knowing which to read and where to start. I love introducing them to books they would not have access to or know about otherwise. The seventh graders are also mostly under grade level for reading and need to improve before they get even more behind. Encouraging reading will allow them better literacy, writing, and reading comprehension.

My project focuses on getting more reading books available to my students, especially in my homeroom. We have school-wide Sustained Silent Reading every week, but many students forget to either bring a book or don't know what to read that interests them. I even get parent requests for what type of books I would recommend to their child to read for fun.

I want to encourage students to read what interests them, such as The Maze Runner and Red Queen series and Ready Player One for struggling readers and Goosebumps, Coraline, and The Shining for the horror-loving readers. I'm also requesting highlighters and reading posters to encourage more reading in my classroom.
