My students need whole book sets to develop a culture of reading and connect to what they are learning in social studies.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Corwine's classroom raised $600

My Students
We are a 6-8 middle school in a small, rural, K-8 Title-1 school on an Indian Reservation in Washington state. The students are strong and powerful, with deep roots in their community. I am often humbled and honored to be their teacher.
They engage well with work that they can find a personal connection with.
Classes on native culture and regional native languages are incorporated into their week. I hope to develop projects and lessons that they can connect with, and that will enrich their lives.
My Project
I would like to incorporate whole book reading into my social studies content. Integrating whole books into the units will encourage a culture of reading, and help students make larger connections to what they are learning. Wrapping a history or health unit around a whole book provides opportunities to focus on the larger concept presented in the book, while presenting the details in a more interesting and accessible manner.
Our middle school is comprised of widely diverse learners.
Using a whole book format I will be able to assign independent reading, ability group for projects and reteaching, and bring together diverse groups for socratic seminars and discussions.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
