Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the first time in twenty years, the Middle school students in our school are receiving the opportunity to be involved fully in the Speech/Drama programs in our local area. While there has been some participation in theater by our students in the past, we are just beginning our second year of a formal program in this subject area as well as student participation in area wide Speech/Drama festivals. These students (in grades 6-8) have been thirsting for the opportunity for this type of creative outlet. They now have this opportunity in our newest curriculum area: Speech and Drama.
Ours is a Title I school district in a high-risk community where most of the students are minority and low-income. These students do not have the financial resources available in some other communities. However, what they lack in money, they compensate for in hard work, dedication, and drive. For many of our students, the theater has provided a sanctuary in which they are safe to explore their creative inspirations.
Our new Speech/Drama program was created to promote public speaking skills in a community in which many students are English language learners. Many of our students do not have daily access to formal speech skills. They learn to speak in slang, but not always in the more formal manner often required in society. Our students need to develop the speaking skills they will need in life beyond the classroom in venues such as job interviews, college, or in the workplace.
Since this program is in its infancy, we have very few resources available for student and teacher use. I need to create a library of age appropriate performance materials that students can use to improve their public speaking and theatrical skills. Students will learn to perform monologues, short plays, improvisations, and reader's theater, as well as begin to learn about other aspects of theatrical production such as scenic design, costuming, lighting, and stage management. In this way, the needs of students with both on stage as well as off stage aspirations may be met.
Your support will make it possible for our students to have a rich variety of materials that will help to foster their budding creativity, creating a brighter future for themselves, and for their community.
