My students need Bouncy Bands to allow them to keep their body moving while they concentrate.

My Students
The students that will benefit from this project range from ages 12 to 15. They are kids from a small urban community. Each student has different academic needs, represent different backgrounds, and have different goals for their future. This year’s focus in my middle school special education classroom will be to make personal academic gains by focusing on individual student needs in some cases finding a way to deal with extra energy while still improving their skills.
The students in this class have a variety of disabilities including specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, health impairments, cognitive delays, and autism spectrum disorder.
We have to work on self control and focus on a daily basis. All of my students come to school with ACES. (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Many students are naturally jittery, but others have anxiety due situations beyond their control. According to research, students report feeling calmer when they use the bouncy bands during class and testing. Teachers report students using the bands are able to focus for longer periods. Our students with ADHD will benefit by releasing energy while seated in the classroom. The ball seats will allow the students to shift and move ways a chair will not.
My Project
The materials requested in this project will allow my middle school special needs students the ability for movement while remaining seated in their personal work space. Students will be able to sit at their work station while having the liberty to get the jitters out by bouncing on the new bounce chair or bouncing their feet on the resistance bands. The bouncy bands slide easily over the front two feet of a classroom chair. While seated the students are able to put their feet on the band to bounce their feet and legs. If the students bodies are in motion, the heart rate is up and oxygen is flowing to the brain. More opportunity for movement without disruption to the learning process will benefit the student as well as their peers and instruction.
Research on these products show a significant improvement in student time on task and fewer discipline issues.
I have included in this order a set of balance pods. Students that aren't using the band's or ball chair can use the pods. While seated or standing, the students put their feet on the flat surface then rock back and forth. Having all 3 items in the learning environment allows each student a choice and flexibility in changing it out when they need to.
