A Blaze Of Glaze: Kicking Our Clay Projects Up A Notch!

My students need a variety of glaze to bring their ceramic projects to a higher level of art. The glaze would be by elementary students in kindergarten to fifth grade.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Galloway's classroom raised $717

My Students

Some art rips or fades, but clay lasts. A clay sheep I made in 3rd grade looks brand new. For most of my students, a crayon or marker is not available for them at home. I want them to create a clay project with a variety of glazes they can cherish forever.

I work at a high poverty school in North Carolina.

I teach art to kindergarten through fifth grade, and most of the day I travel to their classroom with an art cart, or for this project, with clay trays. I teach a variety of students including students with disabilities, students with limited English proficiency, homeless students, and low income students. My students are wonderful and very appreciative of the art we create. Many of them do not have any materials that they can explore and be creative with at home. They love creating art of all kinds, but they especially love when their artwork is 3D or has a purpose. Their artwork is special for them, because many do not have many possessions. The Arts are especially important for many of my students, because this is where they don't feel pressure, they can express themselves and where they can shine. And I teach stars! They are kind, funny, challenging and deserving!!

My Project

We are very fortunate to have a kiln in my school and this provides the students with a wonderful opportunity to explore clay. Every grade has an opportunity to create a clay project, ranging in decorative to utilitarian objects. Most of our art budget is spent on paper, markers, crayons, paint and other materials for 2 dimensional projects. Often, there is no room in the budget to purchase glaze, which can be expensive. Using glaze on clay projects is a fantastic experience for the students. They are amazed to see the matte, dull paint change into the glassy finish they see on their own dishes at home. They will learn the science behind this. The glaze can be used in many grade levels, but I would love to see my fifth graders use a variety of glazes in their coil pots. These are clay pots they can embellish with animal sculptures, designs, lids, and more. They are so proud of this project but I think the use of glaze, rather than paint, would increase their appreciation.

Receiving a donation for a variety of glazes will allow my students to create more professional looking art, that can leave them with a lasting appreciation of the arts, but more importantly, a lasting art project they can keep and be proud of.

Many of my students cannot find their self-esteem from home or from their grades, but they can find it in the arts. This gift would be so appreciated by them. Thank you for looking at my project.
