My Project
I would love to purchase the Pitsco Straw Rockets to help my special education, general education, and autistic students have the opportunity to learn science and mathematical concepts through a hands-on, exciting experience. Students will aim to answer the question: What variables make a rocket fly farthest? Students will then follow the scientific method to conduct an experiments about the types of independent variables that will affect how far a rocket travels, using the Pitsco Straw Rocket Launcher. Different groups of students will test independent variables, record and graph their data, and share their observations with the class. After sharing their data, students will then create "The Best Rocket" and test their new and improved rocket one last time using the Pitsco Straw Rocket Launcher.
Goals of this project:
-Understand and practice the steps of the scientific method.
-Identify the relationships between materials and their properties.
-Communicate and work together with a team.
-Distinguish between different units of measurement.
-Solidify measurement estimation skills.
The second grade students in Rockaway Park, NY have many skills and enjoy hands on learning. Students love to draw, create, build, and invent new devices. Many of my students' special interests involve space.
