My Students
“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” ― Thomas Edison
It might be hard to imagine but my special education students have so much in common with Edison; they understand what it means to persevere in the face of failure and constantly stay positive.
I have the privilege of working with kids who come to me every day knowing they’re going work, they’re going to stumble, but they’re going to learn.
They do it with a smile on their face because eventually they get their “light bulb” moment. The moment when their faces light up with the pride of understanding and success, it’s amazing to see. My Edisons come from diverse and varied backgrounds, but despite these challenges, they don’t fail. They find 10,000 ways to learn.
My Project
As a special educator, differentiation is the name of the game. Finding materials and resources appropriate for all of my students and their needs means we use paper, sometimes a lot of it! With the current funding of our school, making copies has already become very limited. Therefore, I'm requesting ink and paper so my class won't be negatively impacted by the financial state of our district.
Studies show that printed text, especially on a variety of colored paper, helps to improve comprehension in students with learning disabilities over digital screens.
Technology access is an amazing tool I use in the classroom, however as visual and kinesthetic learners my kids also need exposure to materials they can connect to tactilely as well as visually.
I have a variety of printed materials my students use regularly to help improve their reading; including colored phonemic awareness activities, sight word practice, and vocabulary organizers. My students will have the opportunity to practice and improve their learning by having access to activities selected just for them in a modality appropriate to their learning style.
