Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I will be teaching English Language Arts to a group of 25 6th graders in the Chicago Public School system. Although I have not met my students yet, I know that they are resilient and eager to return to in-person learning and that they have persevered many challenges in their community. Some have lost family members to COVID-19, endured financial hardships, or may have experienced isolation due to health restrictions.
Providing my students with books about hope, strength and community will be a great start for transitioning to full in-person learning.
My Project
To launch an upcoming Reading unit, my students will need the novel, Efren Divided by Ernesto Cisneros as well as a binder to collect their reading and writing journey. As the students pause and reflect, ask questions, and connect ideas based upon their reading of the novel, they will use the binder as a tool to help them become more engaged with the text.
The author of this novel celebrates the kindness of the Mexican American community and its richness of food, culture, and resilient spirit.
My 6th graders will be able to connect with the various themes of the novel as they live in a Mexican-American community known as “La Villita” (Little Village) located on the southwest side of Chicago. Not only have my students endured a pandemic, losing loved ones to COVID-19, but they are surrounded by gun violence and the threat of being separated from family members due to deportation looms over their daily lives. The students in the community that I serve need more and more representations in books written by and about people who they can identify with.
