Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title I school in Missouri. About 90% of the students in our building are receiving free or reduced-price lunches. Around 70% of our students are English Language Learners.
This year, we are providing services for newcomer ELL students, and the bravery of these kiddos is immeasurable!
They are excited to learn, even with the extra challenge of navigating a new language, and I want to be sure to give them all the best resources possible!
My Project
This year I will be teaching only newcomer ELL students Who have little to no English speaking skills. These books will provide wonderful opportunities for my students who are new to America or new to the American school system. These books won’t only grow their English skills, but their love for literacy too.
The area we live in doesn’t provide many bilingual resources in the form of literature that is easily accessible to all families, and we know reading is SO important for little minds to grow!
By funding this project you are helping build the foundation of loving to read, giving students access to books that they would never have opportunities for otherwise, and allowing students to keep a part of their culture in the American school system.
These titles will also provide multiple curriculum opportunities. Myself or my para will be able to read with the students exposing them to both languages and pointing out common words to help build English comprehension. As a bonus, if we happen to close for COVID-19 the students will still be able to be engaged in an online setting if I have the ability to read books to them that they can understand. I would also love to have enough to be able to let them borrow these resources for a week at a time so they’re able to read with their Spanish-speaking caregivers if we are out of school for an extended period so they are still learning.
You are doing more than just building a bilingual library when you donate to this project- you are building lifelong learners.
