A Bigger Voice: Classroom Microphone System For All Learners
Help me give my students a classroom audio system. This microphone system will amplify daily instructions, reach students with hearing difficulties, and equip all-school musical productions.

My Students
I'm fortunate to work with about 1200 brilliant, elementary school students on a daily basis. We go to a large school in the Atlanta metro area. In all areas of the school day, we seek to teach citizenship, community, and moral values and help our students grow into caring people.
Though many of my students come from low-income households, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them.
Music gives children an outlet to express emotion and ideas and grabs hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.
My Project
Quiet! Voices off! Please listen! Can you hear me? Sometimes it's just a struggle to be heard! Teachers are constantly fighting to be heard over student conversations, musical instruments, outside noises, and so much more. This classroom audio system can change all of that.
When used in the classroom, a classroom audio system like this one quickly catches students' attention and helps them focus.
The amplified teacher's voice increases on-task behavior and attention to verbal instruction improves ease of listening and teaching and reduces vocal strain and fatigue on teachers. I have several students with hearing loss and hearing difficulties and this system would make it much easier for them to focus in on my voice. If for no one else, this ease of hearing would be invaluable for my ELL (English Language Learner) students!
The teacher microphone can be used in daily classroom instruction and students can also wear or speak into the microphone as needed. Student use of microphones increases participation and allows students to really experience their amplified voice as they sing. The system would get daily use in the music classroom but could also be utilized at our various all-school assemblies and yearly musical programs to help communicate with parents. The technology available for these assemblies/performances is outdated and this system would help the teacher connect with students and parents throughout the performance.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
