My students need books to enrich their curriculum, spark their curiosity and foster a love for reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a recently-graduated teacher, I am slowly building up my library of classic novels, picture books, graphic novels- all those stories many students treasure. However, there are always the students that always find some excuse to not read independently. "I don't like to read"... "I don't have books at home"... "I can't go to the library during winter break". All of these problems can be solved by expanding my classroom library and your donations could provide the 4th grade students of my 2018/2019 class with a variety of stories from which to pick their next - or first- literary obsession. The resources provided with this project would be implemented in literacy lessons, and many of these stories could also be integrated to subjects such as social studies and science.
I want my students to visit the places I visited as a child when I read- but I also want to them to travel beyond.
However, the students in my school represent the diversity found in my county- most students are Latino. I want them to have access to books that represent their experiences and interests, using them as resources to develop and strengthen literacy-related skills.
My Project
The resources in this project would be used in Literacy as independent reads, small group resources and mentor texts- some of the fiction stories even have interdisciplinary potential as they relate to Social Studies content. I have read most of the books I added to my project- and some I am dying to read with my students! However, I also included nonfiction books that could hopefully spark the curiosity of those students who have a difficult time maintaining their interest in fictional stories.
Representation in media matters- especially when you teach a diverse group of students.
To that point, I chose fictional books that represent a diversity of characters. "Ghost" and "The War that Save My Life" tell the stories of two very distinct characters whose stories have a similar theme- that of survival against many odds. Nonfiction books about high-interest topics such as animals and space would also be a welcome addition to my library. I am excited to share these stories- and experience new ones- with my class, thanks to you!
