This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Clifford the Big Red Dog has always been a favorite character for children. I want my students to have the opportunity to connect with him all throughout the year in age and thematically appropriate magazines that they can take home too.
I teach Pre-K in an inner city school next to government funded housing.
About half of the class receives free lunch. Our class is very diverse ethnically, religiously, and economically. They are engaging students who thirst to learn more. The children range in abilities from developing to secure skill levels.
My Project
Clifford The Big Red Dog guides us through "My Big World" Magazine and reports on relevant Pre-K themes throughout the year. It gives the children an opportunity to connect fiction and non-fiction.
The children find Clifford engaging, so they will be drawn to reading the magazines. The magazines are at an age appropriate level so children will be able to "read" it without being frustrated.
Through this magazine, they will be able to develop pre-reading skills, oral language, and phonological awareness. They will learn age appropriate scientific knowledge, as well as social studies skills.
They will also have an opportunity to complete puzzles. Best of all, they get to keep the magazine and re-read it as often as they'd like, thus reinforcing the skills in that particular issue. They will want to read more and will not count out periodicals in their future.
Pre-K is the time where children learn social skills as well as many other skills through play.
My Big World Magazine is another way to learn through play. It is fun and engaging while they learn about the world around them. The children will gain skills that they will use for the rest of their lives through this great magazine.
