My students need a more flexible classroom environment that garment racks, shower curtains, and rugs can provides. The garment racks and shower curtains will create partitions for our large tiled classroom.
Our classroom is a self-contained classroom for students with severe and profound/multiple disabilities. This means we have all our instructional time in the same classroom, we eat lunch together and we have leisure time together! My students do enjoy attending adaptive P.E. and music class with their typically developing peers. Due to the nature of our classroom my students vary widely in terms of academics.
Each student is an amazing and unique person that learns in their own way!
As a special education teacher, my job is to accommodate my students diverse learning needs to the fullest extent possible. Some students need physical prompting to complete their work, some students need a quiet space to feel calm, and some students need less stimulation to focus on their academic and life skills tasks. All my students have different communications needs, some students are non-verbal while some have limited communication abilities. Some of us have difficulty focusing, while others hyper focus. Our classroom is always full of movement and sound.
My Project
Our classroom is a large open room with a tile floor. The vastness of the classroom limits its flexibility. The garment rods and shower curtains will allow me to create dividers to portion the classroom as needed. This way I can create flexible learning environments that can be adjusted easily and quickly to meet diverse student needs. The rugs are a flexible seating option that can be used with the dividers to create learning spaces and calming spaces when necessary. Several students enjoy sitting on the floor to work, the rugs will create a more comfortable learning environment for these students. They will also help create a more vibrant and friendly classroom. These items will benefit us on a day to day basis and will continue to benefit my classroom into the future.
The dividers and rugs will help my students have the flexible learning environment they need to succeed.
The addition of these items will improve our classroom experience on many levels. My students will be able to receive the personalized instruction they deserve more effectively. By eliminating distractions and giving the students designated calming spaces my students will be able to focus on meeting their goals.
