My Students
My students are energetic, creative and full of life. For most of them, kindergarten is their first experience in a school setting. They enter the classroom ready to learn, explore and discover.
I teach at a Title One school so many of my students come from low-income households.
We may not have all the resources that other schools have, but we won't let that stop us! In my classroom, you will find tomorrow's brightest doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers and whatever else they dream of becoming.
Trust me when I say, it is one of the greatest joys to be a part of their success. If you could only see how they beam with joy as they proudly learn to identify letters and begin to write.
My Project
I just finished my first year of teaching. As I reflect over the year, I have thought of lots of small ways to make my classroom more functional and brain friendly.
First, my students need a cool-down corner.
In kindergarten, students are learning how to regulate their emotions. Part of that is learning when they need a break. The corner will have a comfortable rug and sensory fidgets. In addition, I asked for a few bouncy bands for my students' chairs. These are a great fidget for the kiddos that just can't focus with all the wiggles.
I requested red bracelets because of an awesome writing tip I heard from another teacher. Putting red bracelets on their right hand, helps them learn which hand is their right hand.
The pencil sharpener will give my students access to sharp pencils. The pencil sharpener provided by my school is very old and dull. It only halfway sharpens a new pencil. The rest of the sharpening had to be done by a hand sharpener. As a new teacher, I had no idea how big the pencil demand is. I just couldn't keep up. My poor kiddos would get so excited when they got a new pencil. Please help me tame the pencil madness!
The wireless doorbell is a great attention getter. The whole class quiets down quickly and I can attach the remote to my lanyard so I can press the button from anywhere in the room. Making directions quicker and more efficient saves valuable learning time.
The magazine boxes will help organize their papers and journals and save a lot of time passing out their personal materials.
The stickers are a great motivator for students for when they do a good job.
