My Students
I have had the privilege of teaching at my current school for the past 8 years. The last 5 have been spent teaching our school's youngest learners. These 4- and 5-year-old children come to school with a variety of experiences. Our location is extremely diverse in cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of my kiddos are coming to school with no previous school experiences.
For the first time in their young lives, students experience non-preferred tasks for extended periods of time.
The demand is high, and the days are long, so I find ways to make parts of the day feel play based and allow students to self-select activities. I strive to provide my students with engaging activities that make learning meaningful and, may I dare say, fun.
My Project
These products will help create a meaningful soft start for students as they arrive at the classroom. When our school reopened last spring I was determined to reduce some of the stress that had occurred during asynchronous learning. During my research, I came across the concept of a soft start for students. This allows students to come and choose a quiet activity to help them settle into their learning day. I found that the students were most drawn to the balancing activities. Research shows that these activities have a number of benefits for students including; conflict resolution, gross and fine motor development, perseverance, and creativity.
